Hay Analysis For Horses – Safety Through Precise Feed Values

Hay makes up the largest part of a horse’s daily feed ration. Therefore, it is advisable to know the quality and composition of the hay and – if possible – to have it analysed regularly.

With a professional hay analysis you will gain an objective overview of the most important nutritional values of your hay, thus creating a reliable basis for needs-based horse feeding.

The quality of the analysis begins with the taking the hay sample. In order for the result to be meaningful, the sample must be as representative as possible.

I’ll take the proper hay sample and then send it to a specialized laboratory for analysis. The laboratory results show which nutrients are actually contained in the hay and can help to plan further feeding in a targeted manner.

Why is proper sample collection so important?

To obtain meaningful and reliable results from a hay analysis, the quality of the sample is just as important as the laboratory analysis itself.

For the most representative results, hay should be sampled from several bales, ideally from the inside of the bales rather than only from the outer layers. This helps ensure that the sample accurately reflects the hay your horse is actually eating – including its overall nutrient content and quality.

A carefully collected sample provides a much more reliable basis for evaluating your hay and making informed feeding decisions.

Because good feeding advice starts with good information – and that starts with the right hay sample.

Why should you analyse your hay?

Hay can vary significantly in its nutritional composition depending on the time of cutting, weather conditions, soil, plant composition, and storage. Even hay that looks high-quality does not necessarily reveal what nutrients it actually contains.

A hay analysis for horses can therefore be a valuable tool for building a feeding programme on reliable, objective information — especially for horses with specific or more complex nutritional needs.

Understanding what is actually in your hay allows feeding decisions to be made with greater confidence and helps ensure that your horse receives the nutrients they need.
